Boarder Mag TV with WBDU
22/May/2004 - Mick Watkins & wake.com.au
Unbeknown to many readers of Boarder Magazine there is a Video-CD which subscribers receive each issue. This CD, which can be played as a DVD in any regular player, is a compilation of a heap of different material, from DVD reviews to local footage and events that the mag covers. But until now it’s potential hasn’t been fully explored. So over the next two weeks, along with my trusty Polaris driver we are heading out to capture what is really happening in Australian Wakeboarding. The purpose of this trip is not to sugar coat the image of Australian wakeboarding but to find out exactly who is doing what? We will capture how many riders can really land inverts, how many can hit double ups, whether grabs are truly a part of our sport or is it all about acrobatics.
It is widely known that the Brisbane River is a little Mecca for wake enthusiasts. Although this was stop #1 on the trip it will be hard to find any crew with more love for the sport than the guys showed out on the water today.
We were hosted by Benny and J-low AKA Angelo from Wakeboardingdownunder.com they run a local wakeboard website and take as many new people riding as possible. It’s a cool vibe in their Flightcraft Malibu, it's about giving those not fortunate enough to have a killer wake the opportunity to ride one. Benny seems to hold the reins as the motivator and can hold his own behind the boat. As for J-low, he is a soul as it comes, with some stylin waterplay moves and all the phat grabs dialled.
Aaron Bullock was onboard also, the current Mens 1 National Champion. The kid is full style and it was hard to pick who he looked most similar too, Weatherall doing crail glides, Abbott doing tail grab front flips or Luke Wulf spinning smooth 540s. He has just recently hooked up with Liquid Force and FREEX and will be a kid who is rocking Pro’s real soon.
Last time I was on the Brisbane River I shot Mike A-bare, unfortunately the light wasn’t with us on that day and the shots never made the mag, we got a little déjà vu again today but had plenty of light to get the video footage. There is not doubt this kid rules and anyone who sees the BTV footage will agree. He is a former street performer, (you know, like fire juggler) so obviously doesn’t mind doing some crazy stuff. He busts huge on Indy tantrum, batwings and raly’s but the best thing to watch is how he keeps on getting smoked on S-bends, it is really fun to watch a kid with no fear.
FREEX co-owner Jo Camenzuli dropped some huge talent behind the Sportster. His alias is the hoochie glide king and with good reason too, his hoochies are the floatiest I have seen, but on that rational he could be called the method back roll king also. With his 5’s, crows and a bunch of variety to his trick it’s no wonder he just won the QWA series this year.
With Shaz on hand filming as usual her partner Glen Molly strapped in and was the surprise packet of the arvo. He was a Gold Coast Pro Tour judge and today proved that he knows enough about the sport to hold the position. He signature moves are long and fast shifty 180’s. He linked up the smoothest line of big tricks as the sun was going down consisting on f/s Rolls, grab 180’s into the flats, b/s 180 into the flats and some clean 360’s.
Thanks to Scotty Stewart for bring his boat out and also thanks to the Chinaman who was a first time PWC rider who ran into our Polaris while it was sitting on the dock.
